Film sans scénario, Chorée est né à l’hôpital psychiatrique Robert Ballanger (93) en collaboration avec le collectif d’usagers MOUVEMENT(s). Prenant pour point de départ l’impact de la souffrance psychique et des médicaments sur le corps et le mouvement, le projet oscille entre prise de parole et mise en mouvement, témoignage et film de danse. Son titre, emprunté à la Chorea antique, désigne simultanément une danse en groupe et une maladie nerveuse caractérisée par des mouvements involontaires, irréguliers. Il renvoie surtout à l’intention commune : celle de faire corps, de danser ensemble, et de porter un discours à plusieurs voix sur des stratégies de survie contemporaines face à la souffrance psychique.
L’accueil au studio 11 du CENTQUATRE à Paris, a permis de déplacer le dispositif de tournage de l’hôpital vers un espace dédié à la pratique de la danse. Le collectif a alors décidé d’écarter toutes les images tournées à l’hôpital. L’intention initiale, celle de documenter une réalité vécue, s’est doublée d’un désir commun de la poétiser par la danse, d’en faire autre chose et de s’emparer des outils offerts par le lieu pour partager une expérience sensible et synesthésique : une manière de prendre soin de la situation, des corps et de la relation.

Chorea, a film without a script, was created at the Robert Ballanger psychiatric hospital (in Aulnay-sous-bois, France) in collaboration with the participants of the research-creation platform MOUVEMENT(s). The project’s starting point faces the impact of psychological suffering and medication on body and movement, and fluctuates between speech and movement, a testimony and a dance film. Its title comes from the ancient word Chorea and refers simultaneously to a group dance and to a nervous disease characterised by involuntary, irregular movements. But above all, it’s a reference to the collective purpose of the project: to form a single unit, to dance together, and to deliver a multi-voiced discourse about contemporary survival strategies in view of psychological suffering.
When presented in Paris, at the CENTQUATRE’s studio 11, the filming arrangements were able to shift from the hospital to a place specifically dedicated to the art of dancing. The group then collectively decided to discard all the images filmed in the hospital. The initial purpose which was to document a real-life experience was now combined to a common desire to explore a poetical language through dance, to make it evolve and to make use of the material at hand in order to share a sensitive and synesthetic experience: a way to care for the situation and for the relationship.
